Statistical Soil Characterization of an Underground Corroded Pipeline Using In-Line Inspections

Underground pipelines have a space-dependent condition that arises from various soil properties surrounding the pipeline (e.g., moisture content, pH, aeration) and efficiency of protection measures. Corrosion is one main threats for commonly monitored with in-line inspections (ILI) every 2 to 6 years. Preliminary characterizations allow operators propose adequate protective measures prevent any loss containment (LOC) fluid being transported. This characterization usually requires detailed measurements, which could be unavailable or very costly. paper implements categorical measurements defect depth obtained ILI characterize in surroundings pipeline. approach an independence test, multiple correspondence analysis, clustering method K-modes. The was applied real case study, showing more severe defects are likely located poorly drained soils high acidity.
